You may have heard of these exciting new dog chews that pups have been barking about lately. They are commonly referred to as “Yak Chews”, “Chhurpi Chews”, and “Himalayan Cheese Chews.”
These cheese chews have been perfected after years of diligent practice, and cooking methods developed by villagers of Nepal. These villagers have for ages produced yak cheese and milk for human consumption as well. The cows and yaks are allowed to graze on open grasslands and are given fresh cut grass by their owners and caretakers. They are never given hormones, antibiotics, or any other man-made chemicals. With their own ingenuity and diligence they perfected the hard cheese yak chew for dogs to enjoy!
Typically all Himalayan Dog Chews produce these treats and chews with four main ingredients:
- Yak Milk
- Cow Milk
- Lime Juice
- Himalayan Salt
According to PetExpertise, “Milk in its raw form is difficult for dogs to digest but once the milk is made into cheese it is easily digested. Only about 10% of the dogs that try Himalayan Dog Chews experience an initial loose stool or gas and that always resolves. The makers have been giving this product to their dogs for 6 years, and have had no problems over this sustained period of time. Please note that the amount of salt included in the creation of these chews is negligible and the fat content is less than 1% of the whole product.”
The Nepalese manufacturers of these treats sometimes use an all natural smoking process to ensure the chews are preserved without the usage of manmade preservatives. Aside from preserving the product, smoking acts as an antimicrobial, and antioxidant for the Yak Chews which extend their shelf life even further. The smoking process from the manufacturers also add to the Chhurpi’s yellowish brownish appearance.
When comparing the fatty acid profiles of Yak Cheese, and Cheddar Cheese researchers had discovered that:
- Yak cheese was three times higher in omega-3 fatty acids
- Yak cheese was also richer in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA)
Himalayan Dog Chews come in many different sizes and treats:
Bar Chew
The Himalayan Bar Chews come in Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large Bars. Depending on how aggressive a chewer your pup is, and the exact breed you can determine which size is right for your canine sidekick!
Puffed Nuggets
Himalayan Cheese Chews can also come in a premade puffed form which makes the treats already crunchy and not a hard chew that your dog can enjoy as a yummy snack!
Vitamin Supplement Powder
If you have a senior dog it will be great to know that Yak Milk Powder is also available for your pet. You can add this supplement powder to your dogs food especially if they have grown accustomed to the bars as treats.
